Quirks of Normal Life

Fall finally hit Central California this week and I've been reveling in the cool weather. I love the change of seasons. It is amazing that something which happens year after year can still be so...magical to me. This got me to thinking about the other things in my life that are fun...just because.

Every morning when I open my bedroom door three cats are there waiting for me. Two cats wait impatiently on the wood floor to accompany me to the kitchen for their breakfast. The third, my only female cat, waits patiently on the chair just outside my bedroom. Once in the kitchen, I divide the canned cat food into three bowls. One cat waits patiently, one cat stands on his hind legs and supervises (judiciously applying pointy claws to the area around my bottom if I am going to slow or distracted by the television), and the third remains on the chair. I put the two bowls on the floor for the boys, then walk back across the house, pick up the third cat and carry her back to the kitchen and her bowl. People have seen me do this. It is ridiculous that this cat will NOT walk under her own power to the kitchen in the morning for the food that she loves. But, she won't. She likes to be portaged like a queen in a palanquin. I think its funny. So, I carry her. Every. Day.

I have two hanging pots near my breakfast table. They are both vine-like in appearance. Sometime in the past two years a single vine-y outgrowth speared through its neighbor in slow motion to reach my patio door. I watched this happen over the course of months and did nothing to stop it. My mother pointed out the obvious incursion once when she was visiting. She wanted to trim it back. I said no. She looked at me for a minute and said "You think its funny, don't you?". Yep, I do and I am waiting to see if the violated plant will reciprocate in kind. Life is fascinating. I want to see what happens next.

I decided some time ago that right before I go to sleep I need to meditate. I started off by listening to a nice Yoga Nidra meditation and then just doing it on my own. Great, right? Except I also have one cat in the room because bed time is his special Mommy and Me time. Have you ever tried to meditate, unmoving, concentrating on your body and breathing with a very active and loving cat nearby? Let us just say that the process degenerates rather quickly. My cat's mission in life becomes "Get Mom to Move, Preferably to Pet Me." Therefore, as I try to relax I have a cat throwing itself, purring madly, against my relaxed hands. Standing on my abdomen as I try to breath in a relaxed manner is another favorite. When he's having no luck at all, he walks up onto my chest and either politely lays down and "accidentally" extends his claws into the most sensitive parts of my chest or  head-buts me repeatedly in the mouth until I have to move him or suffocate. A normal person would just remove the cat from the room. I am not a normal person. I think its funny. He makes me laugh and what is better than that before bed? So, every night, without fail, no matter how much I want to just crawl into bed and sleep, I put myself on the floor and pretend to meditate so I can be mauled by my loving and overly attentive cat.

There are dog things that crack me up as well and I feel bad they didn't make this post. However, since I had a recent change in doggy membership after Beth's death, quirky new patterns and habits have yet to emerge. It is early days with my new dog Maisie and I can't wait to see what happens next.
Oh, were you trying to relax on the hammock in the nice fall weather?
